You are wrong. Even with valid H visa you need TV for UK. My wife had valid H4 visa in passport during her last visit to India and she had to return home from the airport and pay extra $ 250 and travel next day via Paris.
According to check in agent per UK rules even if you have a valid visa but have not travelled intyernationally within last 12 months you need TV.
So its not just for ppl who have AP or expired visa, thoise who have valid H visas but havent travelled out in last 12 months also need it.
For those in South ( Texas, Oklahoma, New Mexico, Louisiana) best way to go to India is new Emirates direct flight between Houston and Dubai and then onward to India.
I have had 3-4 friends fly this route since they started flying in November 2007 and they have nothing but praise for everything. These guys have excellent food and entertainment and no transit visa hassels plus duty free sopping in Dubai is good.

I'm wondering if these figures actually provide ammo for people who claim that H1b is driving down salary. A $50k median starting and a $60k median is not that great.
It's not too far off the mark. The median for initial employment is likely skewed by all the college hires and new arrivals. The $50k median is not too far off the mark from the $53,000 median reported by UIUC for 2005. The median for continuing employment is quite respectable at $68,000.

Heard the same from my lawyer, she has changed her tune completely in 2 days. Now she says that she is hearing the same thing and is possible. They are working through the weekend and has asked me to keep my blackberry on me at all times as they will be providing emails updates every 4 hours or if and when the said bulletin is released.

You are right, with second set of application I just filed 485, did not apply for EAD and AP.
every lawyer who has OKed multiple 485s has specifically asked us to apply for EAD/AP on only one of the applications.

Thanks for the replies fellas, this isn't a renewal I am talking about. This is the first time I have applied for an EAD. BTW, does anyone know what's involved in converting from H4 to EAD status i.e.
1. Do you need to apply for SSN before you take a job offer?
A. Yes, you can not start working w/o a SSN
2. EAD by itself is enough to accept employment?
A. No, refer to 1
3. Can you take jobs/resign as and when you please or do you have to somehow get back to H4 status if you quit job on EAD?

Mark's previous suggestion works fine in such scenarios. Do not mention the word "EAD" before hand.Do not mention H1 even. Do not try to even discuss EAD/H1 etc... As long as requirement allows Green card and where ever it is required for you to mention work status, jot down " Elligible to work for any US employer in USA". That would work. After interview, if they select submit EAD as a proof. At that moment they will not be able to deny that as a work status proof.
Note: Other thing I experienced is using the word "Work Permit" in place
of "EAD" makes things easy for everybody.

� FBI Fingerprint Check�FBI fingerprint checks are conducted for many applications. The FBI fingerprint check provides information relating to criminal background within the United States. Generally, the FBI forwards responses to USCIS within 24-48 hours. If there is a record match, the FBI forwards an electronic copy of the criminal history (RAP sheet) to USCIS. At that point, a USCIS adjudicator reviews the information to determine what effect it may have on eligibility for the benefit. Although the vast majority of inquiries yield no record or match, about 10 percent do uncover criminal history (including immigration violations). In cases involving arrests or charges without disposition, USCIS requires the applicant to provide court certified evidence of the disposition. Customers with prior arrests should provide complete information and certified disposition records at the time of filing to avoid adjudication delays or denial resulting from misrepresentation about criminal history. Even expunged or vacated convictions must be reported for immigration purposes.
� FBI Name Checks�FBI name checks are also required for many applications. The FBI name check is totally different from the FBI fingerprint check. Whats the fee of INR 155 for? Nothing of that sort was mentioned to me by the consular officer. He just asked to submit the passport. But if you do have to submit, should I get it in form of a receipt from HDFC as I did for the visa appointment or just cash?

I understand your point of view, I used to work in solar energy. When i completed my post graduation most of the jobs required a USC (this was 10 yrs ago). I had to switch to software related jobs.
For me the number one priority is how Obama will handle the Skilled immigration issues. will he guided by Sen Dick Durbin, who at the moment seems to be his policy wonk. That will be a disaster for us. They have no intension of supporting skilled immigrants. We will will have to make some serious decisions if he is elected.
How many of us want to continue to stay in limbo...i dont.

I have been a reader on this site for years and have contributed to many of the fund raising campaigns. I agree with many of the comments on this thread. Brothers and sisters we need to team up and clamour for fair treatment; let us all contribute with dollars and sweat. I assume most of us on this site can afford to contribute a lot more than we have in the past and the potential rewards (fair opportunity to Immigration) are immense.
I have personally been in the US for ten years and believe I have contributed to the society a lot - while being a law abiding tax payer (I wish I could use the word citizen). And my story is not any different from any of yours. Why then we haven't gotten what we deserve at this point, afterall we have earned it by our sweat. The reason is we haven't realized our strength: in numbers, in dollars and in our contribution to the American society. No one is going to listen until we make our plight known to the public at large and to the law makers.
Some thoughts on how to go about doing it. We need a detailed plan with names of volunteers who can contribute their time. The plan should also include a list of key law-makers we are going to contact and how. All of this will cost money - so the first thing to do is support the fund-raising efforts. I also think we need to increase the fund-raising target by a lot; because the stakes are so high.
I apologize if I have wasted anyone's time with a long post. And I thank all of you for caring for one another and by sharing so much info with all the silent readers of this site. I have learned more about immigration from this site than my employer or immigration attroneys could ever share with me.
I will now put my money where my mouth is by making a contribution to Immigration Voice.

Good discussion. I am not a fox fan, but i read NYT and Drudgereport, listen to Rachel Maddaw as well as Handel. In fact i read any political and economics related blog i can lay my hands on. I understand your points.
My point is that people say he will do so many things, the problem is that the congress is not changing. The congress has to approve something so that he can sign it. Secondly no matter what you say companies will do whatever is right for the bottomline and share price. if he starts taxing companies they relocate, he has proposed increasing the social security taxes across all categories. Says he will not increase taxes for middle class americans but gives little indication of how he will finance the trillion dollar spending program. If his universal health program passes then you will see more deducted out of your paycheck. How will he create tons of jobs, how will he subsidize education. The fact of the matter is that he will be under exterme pressure if he is elected to office with such high expectations. As for long term, the country has to increase interest rates to support the current account deficit. IF you increase interest rates the economy will further go in the tank. The country has to increase taxes to fund SS or Medicare. If not they need to overhaul the SS and MC system and any pandering politican will never be able to make that change.
The fact of the matter is that both are career politicians and will do anyting to win. i just want to present an opposing view when one is painted as the saviour and the other a @$#@ in a total crapfest where no one is pure.
My point is that people say he will do so many things, the problem is that the congress is not changing. The congress has to approve something so that he can sign it. Secondly no matter what you say companies will do whatever is right for the bottomline and share price. if he starts taxing companies they relocate, he has proposed increasing the social security taxes across all categories. Says he will not increase taxes for middle class americans but gives little indication of how he will finance the trillion dollar spending program. If his universal health program passes then you will see more deducted out of your paycheck. How will he create tons of jobs, how will he subsidize education. The fact of the matter is that he will be under exterme pressure if he is elected to office with such high expectations. Let us all send AC21 action item mails to USCIS. Let us send some more through our spouses and teenage children. Also get some more signed by our friends and neighbors.
The letters are very generic. They can be sent by anyone including GC holders and citizens too. All it costs is a few Dollars! So what are you waiting for you? If you have hired a nanny, make her send one too :)
